How to Read a Supplement Label in Five Steps

A supplement label holds a lot of useful information once you know where to look. Here is a simple five-step check.

  1. Check the serving size. All the numbers on the label are based on this amount, so note how many capsules or scoops make a serving.

  2. Look at the amount per serving. This lists each ingredient and how much of it you get.

  3. Read the % Daily Value. This shows how much a serving contributes to a typical daily diet. Some ingredients do not have a daily value yet.

  4. Scan the "other ingredients." This is where you will find capsule materials, fillers and anything you may want to avoid, such as common allergens.

  5. Look for quality signals. Check for a lot number, an expiration date and any independent testing seals.

Taking a minute to read the label helps you compare products fairly and choose what fits your needs.
